Understanding 3D Printing: Technology, Applications, and Future Potential

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a revolutionary technology that creates three-dimensional objects by depositing material layer by layer based on a digital model. Unlike traditional subtractive manufacturing—where material is cut away from a solid block—3D printing builds products from the ground up, reducing waste and enabling highly customized designs.

How 3D Printing Works

The process begins with the creation of a digital blueprint, usually designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This model is sliced into thousands of horizontal layers, which guide the 3D printer as it constructs the object. Depending on the printer type, materials such as thermoplastics, metals, resins, ceramics, and even biological cells can be used.
